Burning a Path

Opening the eyes of millions…

Hey, wanna get Naked?

Hey, wanna get Naked?

Great pickup line, right? I discovered this great tasting drink about two months ago, and I haven’t had anything better tasting since. It comes packed with a full pound of fruit in every bottle.

Personally, I think it tastes better and is more satisfying than an ice cream smoothie. So why an article about getting Naked? Well, let’s talk about obesity in America. Personally, I think there is enough fat in America to feed the starving children of Africa….

According to HealthGoods one in three Americans aged 20 to 74 are overweight. That’s 58 million Americans!!! That’s also disgusting. Here are some more statistics and facts:

  • Doctors usually agree that men with 25% or more body fat and women with a body fat of 30% or more are considered overweight(HealthGoods).
  • Globally, there are more than 1 billion overweight adults, at least 300 million of them obese (World Health Organization).
  • Obesity and being overweight can lead to chronic illnesses, irregular blood pressure, cholesterol problems, and insulin resistance(World Health Organization).

Causes

  • Sleep deprivation (CBS News)
  • Pollution (hormonal imbalance from chemicals) (CBS)
  • Air conditioning(CBS)
  • DECREASED smoking(CBS)
  • Medicines (CBS)
  • Ethnicity (CBS
  • Mothers at an older age giving birth lead to a higher risk or child obesity (CBS)
  • Genetics (CBS)
  • Sitting in front of the television (video games, couch potato activities, etc…) (common knowledge)
  • Lack of exercise (common knowledge)

So, just how much, is too much? Let’s take the average adult female, no ethnicity or age taken into account. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted from 1999-2002 also found at About.com, the average adult female weighs 162.9 pounds. Let’s assume this one particular female is overweight and no more, exactly 30% of her body weight is fat. That is 48.87 pounds! Yuck! Now, according to the Department of Health and Human Services, Women’s Health 2005 US, 27.3 percent of women in the US are overweight. According to the CIA World Fact Book, updated in 2008, there are 124,588,737 women aged 15 and older in the US. Since 27.3% of women in the US are overweight, that means that there are roughly 34 million overweight women in the US. Assuming they are all borderline overweight(which they all aren’t), that gives us a minimum of 1.66 billion pounds of fat in just overweight women. Not to mention that we haven’t even considered the women that are obese or the males yet.

Just think of how much food 1.66 billion pounds of fat amounted to and how many people that could have been fed. It’s a gory thought, but maybe we should liposuction all the overweight people in the US and feed the world…

So, what’s the moral of the story? Basically, go get Naked! It’s healthy, tasty, and damn; it sounds great!

Brained – Demythitized

Brained

Are we left brained or right brained? Are we artistic or scientific? For some people one side or the other may indeed be their strength or weakness. However, I do not think that a person is limited to one side or the other, and in my case, I think it is bull shit.

Here is a list of properties between the two sides according to The Daily Telegraph:

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic
detail oriented
facts rule
words and language
present and past
math and science
can comprehend
knowing
acknowledges
order/pattern perception
knows object name
reality based
forms strategies
practical
safe

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling
“big picture” oriented
imagination rules
symbols and images
present and future
philosophy & religion
can “get it” (i.e. meaning)
believes
appreciates
spatial perception
knows object function
fantasy based
presents possibilities
impetuous
risk taking

In high school I was involved in Forensics and Debate and currently at the university level I find myself in several officer positions in clubs and actively involved in many events. Personally, I find myself literate, logical and reality based. However, I often find myself thinking of these crazy plans of what I plan to do with my life, I paint, I play sax, I like to jump off of cliffs into water(a bit outgoing) and I have feelings, yet I am into science and math.

I also recently took a test at similiarminds.com and I found myself very closely matched between the two sides (slightly more left brained). I also took saw the spinning dancer at The Daily Telegraph only to realize according to the article I was right brained. So which one is it?

When I was younger and in grade school, my mother and I lived on my grandparent’s farm and I found farm machinery fascinating. When I entered middle school I became very artistic and took a lot of art classes at a glass museum in a nearby city. When I entered high school I discovered physics and fell in love, only to realize that I loved playing music as much as I enjoyed reading about the properties of subatomic particles, Fermi Lab and the fundamentals of nuclear chemistry.

I think that it is possible to be both artistic and scientific. I know of students at my own university that have dual majored in both engineering and music and succeeded. I, myself am triple majoring in Aerospace Engineering, Music Technology and German for the BA’s and BS degrees. I think that if you work hard enough you can work both sides of the brain and do away with this myth. The only reason people aren’t good at math is because they either; never tried hard enough, didn’t care, didn’t have the money or chance to learn while they were young and willing, or they have some mental or physical condition limiting them.

I hope this opens some of your minds who think that you are one or the other. A spinning dancer cannot tell you what type of a person you are, none the less the type of thinker you are.

150 Billion Dollar Increase in War Funding

Photo

The above photo is from Yahoo News. Iraqi volunteers carry an unidentified body wrapped in a white sheet in the holy city of Najaf.

The US Senate has recently approved an increase in war funding by 150 billion dollars. Hasn’t this world seen enough bloodshed? Over and over again democratic leaders state that they want the war to end, and that they are urging President George Bush to set a timeline for withdrawl of american troops. However, when the latest increase of $150B was approved, it was passed by a vote of 92-3. THAT my friends is not urging the president to withdrawl. That’s telling him to continue his Crusade of whatever the hell he feels like.

ONE HUNDRED FIFTY BILLION DOLLARS!!!

I thought we were doing such a great job in the middle east. What does the US military need another $150B for? So we can secure the country…again?

A while back in Bush’s January 31, 2006 State of the Union Address, he stated:

“Keeping America competitive begins with keeping our economy growing. And our economy grows when Americans have more of their own money to spend, save, and invest. In the last five years, the tax relief you passed has left $880 billion in the hands of American workers, investors, small businesses, and families — and they have used it to help produce more than four years of uninterrupted economic growth.

(Applause.)

Yet the tax relief is set to expire in the next few years. If we do nothing, American families will face a massive tax increase they do not expect and will not welcome. “

Just how much has this war cost the American people so far? Oh right-$450B
and 4,105 coalition deaths, and easily totaling over 28,000 wounded.

That’s over half the savings in tax. Once this war is finally all said in done several economists are saying that this war could cost us between one to two trillion dollars or more.

As Representative Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus put it;

“He wants an open-ended commitment with an open wallet by the American people”

But why is that? To free the starving people of the Middle East by building 10.1 million in missile defense? The united States spends a significant amount more money on the military than any other country in the world. It seems that the US wants to be the “world police,” even though the democrats haven’t done much…

I like to sum this intense military government expenditure with my fellow college room mate, Zach Bailey’s rationalization of the American people’s mind set:

“God has a guiding hand over the world, though most people dont feel so secure about it… He wants us to build the Giant Fucking Space Lazer anyway, because this is America. Both sides win”

Sandip Burman

This is really sweet. He came and played at my High School tonight. This is just a random video I pulled off of You Tube that I thought was really neat. He seems to intertwine Jazz and a classical Indian music style. It is totally awesome.

Sydney, Australia takes a stand against global warming

”Australia’s largest city was plunged into darkness for an hour Saturday night as Sydney underwent a self-imposed blackout to raise awareness of global warming.”

It’s about time people join together to fight global warming and pollution.  I just can’t believe that it took this long to do something.  Sure are groups, and Earth day and other such events to remind us of the global warming and pollutants that stand in our way, but the people of this planet seem to be making great strides in reverse when it comes to the environment.  I just hope that other people, and cities as a whole follow Sydney’s example, and make a difference.

See the Iraq War Through Soldiers’ Eyes

I found this really interesting, I hope you do too.

Rarely do we see what it’s like through their eyes.  Living in a nation where the media limits what we see it is hard to get a grasp on what is really happening.  This short slide show gives more of a mellow view, but there is still some bloodshed.  Must I remind you that the deaths have now totaled over three-thousand?  I hope you enjoyed the short slide show.  t was brought to you by Yahoo News.

Siberian Mine Blast Kills 78; 50 trapped

It is sad to see that there is still ventilation problems and these new quotas that force workers to mine more coal creating carelessness.   I just do not see how companies could be so careless when dealing with lives.  It is a sad world that we live in.  I think there would be less murder, less corruption, and less “accidents” if people could just put people first, consider the views of the people, and maybe use some morals once in a while.
